The Healing Hearts Quilt Project was created as a means of allowing United Methodists the opportunity to express their feelings of loss and hope, and to also serve as an outlet for showing patriotism regarding the ongoing events in our world since September 11, 2001.

Directions for completing a quilt block:

  • We are asking that each block be 3' by 6' - no more and no less!
  • When you cut the fabric, please allow 2-3 inches on each side for a hem.
  • Your design may be either horizontal or vertical
  • Please mark on the wrong side of the fabric where the borders begin.
  • Please use a durable fabric as this quilt will be folded and unfolded a lot. A medium-weight, non-stretch fabric, such as cotton duck or poplin will work well.
  • Please sew things to the block. Glue will deteriorate over time and we don't want to lose any items from the blocks.
  • Batting is not needed.
  • Please include a panel of unbleached/ivory fabric to be sewn on as backing.
  • Feel free to use any of the following techniques to construct your panel: appliqué, paint (brush on textile or colorfast dye), or indelible markers.
  • Please do not use puffy paint - it is too sticky and it will eventually fall off.
  • You may also stencil on a design or make a collage (make sure that the materials used won't tear the quilt, such as glass, sequins, or bulky objects).
  • If you wish to use photos, letters, poems, etc., you may photocopy or scan them onto iron-on transfer paper and then iron them to the panel. Transfer paper is available at office supply stores.

It is our hope that the listed guidelines are just that, guidelines. We look forward to having many varied and expressive designs.

Good Luck!
